Unusual Animal Species on Sandy Soils
When we think of the richness of the marine world, bright coral reefs teeming with life come to mind. But it is not only fish that live in the sand. Many mollusks, such as bivalve oysters and mussels, burrow into the ground, filtering the water and cleaning it of organic particles. Crustaceans, such as sand shrimp, dig complex burrows in which they hide from danger. Some species, such as the roosterfish, use the sand bottom as a place to lay eggs, giving their offspring a chance to survive in relative safety.
The sand bottom also serves as an important habitat for the young of many species. Small fish and invertebrates find shelter here from predators and the opportunity to grow in safer conditions. This ecosystem, although less saturated than coral reefs, plays a key role in maintaining the balance of marine life.
Exploring the sandy seabed is a difficult task, as its inhabitants are often hidden and difficult to access. However, with the help of modern technology and underwater research, scientists continue to discover new species and study their behavior. Each new discovery reminds us that the ocean still holds many secrets, especially in places where no one expects to find them.
